Hollow Creek Tree Farm in Gilbert, SC got its first SAJE pruner in 1986. Here, owner Mike is pruning Leyland Cypress & White Pines that will be ready for sale Christmas season 2011. Hershey is our old farm dog, a Lab/Pointer mix that loves pruning season. The firing of the small engine sparks her hunting instincts and brings out the puppy in her. One thing to note is that the manufacturer of the SAJE would surely NOT recommend reaching into a tree as we do when pruning. BUT, we are very careful and deliberate when doing it: always stopping, always keeping our hands well away from the blade and always bringing the limb TO the blade rather than the blade to the limb. (www.silvermountainenterprises.com) SilverMountain Christmas Trees has more than 3500 acres planted in Christmas Trees, and developed the Silver Mountain Christmas Tree Nursery, the newest and largest Conifer Seedling Nursery in the Pacific Northwest. The farm also harvest approximately 250000 trees each year, shipping fresh Christmas Trees throughout the US and the world. We grow noble fir, douglas fir, fraser fir, grand fir, and canaan fir. Our seeds are developed in our own seed orchard and planted using our Vacumn Precision Seeder. During the production of the first two years, the roots will be properly trimmed using our Reciprocating Undercutter Wrencher and our Lateral Root Pruner. All three of these machines were developed for our own use and are now sold throughout the world to other nurseries. At two years of age, the Christmas Tree Seedlings are dug up from the ground, graded, packaged, and planted in the production fields. (Those for sale or later planting are stored in refrigerated coolers or freezers, depending on the length of time they need to be stored.) The trees will be watered regularly, fertilized, trimmed, and nurtured for approximately another six years until harvest. Trees are then graded in the field by two-women teams, and then tagged for size and selection. They are now ready for harvest. Crews will work through the fields cutting tagged trees. Although frangipanis are fairly hardy, there are some pests and diseases which can affect them, predominantly fungus, scale, frangipani rust and stem rot.

Fungus, Mold & Powdery Mildew

Leaves affected by fungus or mold can be sprayed with a copper based fungicide and white oil solution. If you prefer organic solutions, try a mixture of powdered milk powder and white oil or detergent.

Keeping plants well nourished helps prevent fungal infections. Potash is particularly good for improving disease resistance in frangipanis.

Hemispherical Scale

Leaves affected by hemispherical scale have dark to light brown bumps that are glossy, smooth and hemispherical. Leaves may have a black sooty coating.

Scale can be treated by spraying with white oil in spring to early summer. If you prefer organic solutions, try encouraging natural predators to your garden, such as ladybugs, the scale eating caterpillar, and parasitic wasps. Many plants attract ladybugs including daisies, zinnias, and zucchini.

Frangipani Rust

There is a new disease attacking frangipanis in Australia called frangipani rust. It is most noticeable in late summer and early autumn. An orange to yellow powdery substance (actually pustules) appears on the underside of leaves. They rupture and spread spores which pass the disease to other plants nearby. The upper sides of the leaves are brown and discoloured. Severe infections may cause the leaves to drop prematurely and can lead to the death of small plants, however larger trees appear to suffer no ill effects (apart from leaf drop).

To control frangipani rust try using a fungicide (such as Mancozeb) in the warmer months to slow the development of the disease. Disposing of all fallen leaves in winter and spraying the tree and the area under the tree with a fungicide may slow the reappearance of frangipani rust next season.

The good news is that recently some frangipani trees have built up a resistance to rust, so it may be on it's way out.

Stem Rot & Black Tip Dieback

As frangipanis lose their leaves over winter, soft, withered stems may become visible. It's a condition called 'stem rot' and it's quite common in trees that have been stressed by frosts, drought, lack of sunlight or just plain old age.

The best way to keep it under control is to simply prune off any diseased growth, but when you do, it's important to make sure you cut it right back to good, healthy tissue.

Dying tip growth is commonly referred to as black tip dieback. Some newer deciduous cultivars and evergreen frangipanis are particularly prone to the disease.

Commercial frangipani growers suggest the problem is worse in areas where fruit-spotting bug and beetle activity is high. This is because any insect attack on the tip of the plant predisposes it to a secondary dieback infection.

Affected plants typically reshoot beneath the damaged portion of stem. If plants appear unsightly or you are concerned that the rot is advancing down the stem, use sharp pruners to cut back to clean tissue. Be sure to use hot water or household disinfectant to clean pruners between cuts so as to minimise potential disease transfer.

Badly affected plants may benefit from an application of fungicide to limit the disease's spread.

Bonsai Care Tips - Place your plant indoors in a warm well lighted location and remember that indoor bonsai are intolerant of outdoor conditions, unless you live in a tropical area.

Location

Outdoor care Bonsai - Keep your Bonsai outdoors in a good sunlight location. It can be brought indoors for 2 or 3 days then rotated outside again. Protect bonsai from freezing temperatures. Many outdoor Bonsai can tolerate freezing temperatures such as the junipers and cypress trees. Do NOT let your outdoor Bonsai dry out. They should be watered daily during the hot summer months.

Bonsai care watering - All Bonsai like good watering throughout the season. It is Best to submerge the container in water then let it soak for 5-10 minutes. Be sure the container drains well.

Fertilizing - Yes you should fertilize once every four months using a 20-20-20 fertilizer at half the label rate. Do NOT fertilize when soil mix is dry. Do NOT over fertilize bonsai you may risk burning the root system if you over fertilize.

Pruning - Prune bonsai to the desired shape YOU want. Use small sharp scissors for smaller indoor type Bonsai. You should also re-pot every 2-3 years usually in the early spring. You can also use larger type pruners to trim off large limbs or branches. Purchase bonsai type pruners at your local garden or nursery store.

Insects/Diseases - Your Bonsai tree or plant is a smaller version of the original. They should be treated for insects and diseases the same as any other tree or plant.

Types of Bonsai - There are many types of bonsai. If you are looking to create and care for Bonsai I suggest using Juniper, Cypress, and Ficus as they are the most common and the easiest to start with.
